No matter what your favourite wine is, be it a shiraz or a sauvignon blanc, we can all agree it’s better when it’s free from headaches and other side effects.
While wine is great, it is estimated that as many as 7 out of 10 wine drinkers experience reactions ranging from headaches, stomach distress and facial redness to flushing, joint pain, bloating and next- day hangover. This is no longer a problem with ‘The Wand’ (for by the glass) & “The Wave” (for by the bottle), selectively absorbing the histamines and sulphites in wine just before you drink it, opening up a whole world of awesome wine adventure to FOODWELL’s customers.
Morning-after headaches may be triggered by a sensitivity to ‘histamines’, naturally occurring substances from grape skins that are especially common in big, bold reds. Another culprit: ‘sulphites’ are also naturally occurring but are also added to white wines to extend shelf life
The term sulphite is an inclusive term for sulphur dioxide (SO2), a preservative used in winemaking for its antioxidant and antibacterial properties. SO2 plays an important role in preventing oxidisation and maintaining a wine’s freshness. Sulphites can cause allergy like reactions (intolerances), most commonly asthma symptoms in those with underlying asthma, sometimes allergic rhinitis (hayfever) like reactions, occasionally urticaria (hives) and very rarely, anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions). Wheezing is the most common reaction.
Symptoms you should watch for include typical asthmatic or allergy-style suffering: hives, headaches, itching, sneezing, coughing, swelling, as well as gastrointestinal distress. Sometimes just smelling or opening up a bottle of wine that’s particularly high in sulphites can induce a sneeze or cough, though it may take up to half an hour to experience symptoms after drinking it, according to IFAS (Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences). And heads up: Even if you’re symptom-free now, you can develop a sensitivity any time in your life (even as late as your forties or fifties).
While The Wand & Wave’s sulphite-reducing claims aren’t super important for most people, they actually can be useful for upgrading your wine experience, literally adding oxygen to wine, a way more efficient way to “let the wine breathe.”
If you get a headache before you’re even halfway into your first glass, it’s probs not the quantity and not the sulphites, it’s the histamines. Histamines are found in the skins of grapes. To make red wine, the fermenting juice sits with the skins, giving it that red colour, bitterness (tannins), and histamines. These are to blame for the achy head you might get from that glass to two of red.
The product is unique in its simplicity and its genius. Effectively it does the same job – if not better than a water filter – alleviating the histamines and sulphites which are the cause of so many reactions and adverse side effects of drinking wine. At the same time by using the product also creates an aeration effect which in turn enhances the taste of the wine.
We sell ‘The Wand’ at £2 (for by the glass) & “The Wave” £7 (for by the bottle) as a service to enable wine lovers who normally abstain to re-introduce the amazing world wine into their dining experience.
